Hahaha! We have the same kind of problem in Quebec. Most people arguing that French should be obligatory for all immigrants put up front the argument of cultural preservation whilst they don’t know a thing about the French culture. Some separatists (a bunch of people here in Quebec want to separate from Canada) are really extreme; I have heard of stories of people talking in English during St Jean Baptiste’s day (Quebec’s national day) and being beaten up for that.
Nationalism or patriotism can get very stupid by times. To me, they are the same as racism, sexism, homophobia or any forms of intolerance in fact. Imagine the same guy but with “Make White people America’s official race” on his sign (and with a lot of mistakes). The only difference is the targeted audience. The worst part is that those intolerant people do not consider themselves as intolerant.
